Is Google Now coming to desktop Chrome?

Chrome started on computers and moved to smartphones, so is it time for the smartphones to return the favor? An issue in the code repository for the Chromium project (on which the Chrome browser is based) suggests that Google Now cards are about to make their way to the desktop browser.
The issue is titled “Creating a skeleton for Google Now for Chrome implementation“, which suggests there’s more work to be done before Now hits Chrome.

According to the description of the issue, Google Now cards will be shown using Desktop Notifications.

So, will this be enabled in all Chrome browsers or is it something meant for Chromebooks? Google Now works better if it has location info (e.g. it knows you’re at work), but then all the flight and package tracking info will work just as well on your home computer.

Anyway, keep an eye out for Now cards appearing in in the Chrome dev channel.

TWITTER GOOF UP

Twitter an online social network and micro-blogging service that enables users to send and receive text message up to 140-characters called tweets.It was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched that July. In an routine security check-up Twitter said that it mistakenly reset the passwords of "a large number" of its more than 140 million active users while conducting routine security screening to identify accounts that may have been compromised.

                                                                                  


"In instances when we believe an account may have been compromised, we reset the password and send an email letting the account owner know this has happened," Twitter said in its blog on Thursday. "In this case, we unintentionally reset passwords of a larger number of accounts, beyond those that we believed to have been compromised."

Carolyn Penner, a spokeswoman for the social-networking site, declined to say how many Twitter accounts were affected by the error. She said that there had not been a security breach.

MICROSOFT LAUNCHES HALO 4 GAME

"Master Chief" springs back into action with the release of Microsoft's Halo 4, the latest installment of the Xbox blockbuster that will compete with Activision Blizzard's Call of Duty franchise for holiday-season bragging rights. Microsoft hopes the return of the laconic green-armored super-soldier protagonist of Halo, which has generated $3 billion of revenue since its 2001 launch, after a five-year hiatus will bring out gamers in droves when the title begins selling in more than 40 countries starting midnight. 


                                    
                                           


The Halo series, made by Microsoft Game Studios, spearheaded the company's foray into gaming that began with the 2001 launch of the first Xbox. It has sold more than 46 million copies to date and helped the console lead the market ahead of Sony's Playstation and Nintendo's Wii. 

It remains to be seen if the well-reviewed game can revive flagging videogame sales or surpass "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2", which goes on sale next week and will vie for the title of 2012's top-selling game. The first-person shooter series is now the biggest title on the Xbox. 

Nintendo is also selling its new Wii U console, featuring a companion tablet controller, over the holidays. Microsoft's rival Activision Blizzard is set to release a dedicated Wii U version for its "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" title when the new console hits stores on November 18. 

"Because there hasn't been a game to star "Master Chief" for five years, there's a bit of a pent-up demand," said Ryan McCaffrey, Xbox Executive editor at videogame website IGN.com. 

"Call of Duty has taken over as the most popular game on the Xbox, so I think it will be very close," he added. 

In Halo 4, "Master Chief" deals out death and destruction to evil aliens while embarking on a quest to save his longtime friend and artificial-intelligence construct Cortana. 

Microsoft, which has high hopes for the latest Halo, is pulling out the stops. Halo: Reach, the fourth game in the series sans Master Chief, was launched in September 2010 and raked in $200 million in global sales on launch-day. 

The company is hosting marquee events in cities from Seattle and Berlin to London - where the company will stage an as-yet-undisclosed stunt on the Thames river. 

Microsoft also held a massive launch event last week in the small country of Liechtenstein in Europe. Some historic landmarks and the countryside of the 62-square mile nation was transformed into a futuristic Halo-like universe and reporters were allowed to test the game. 

GameStop, the largest US chain, is also planning midnight events. 

With less than 12 hours before the title's launch, GameStop spokeswoman Wendy Dominguez said fans had begun lining up outside a handful of stores, including at their Flower Mound, Texas outlet. Some dressed in Halo costumes. 

"They've either pre-ordered Halo or they're waiting to get their hands on a copy and they're pretty excited about it," Dominguez said.

Ubuntu releases

The Ubuntu team broke new ground in committing to a programme of scheduled releases on a predictable six-month basis. It was decided that every fourth release, issued on a two-year basis, would receive long-term support (LTS). LTS releases are typically used for large-scale deployments.

Ubuntu is different from the commercial Linux offerings that preceded it because it doesn't divide its efforts between a high-quality commercial version and a free, 'community' version. Tips for using Windows 8

The new Windows 8 operating system is now available and it faces users with a lot of changes. There is, for example, no start menu and no task bar on the start screen, which has tiles instead.

Those who would like to switch between programmes must instead move the mouse into the lower left corner of the screen and move downwards. Then a list of recently opened programmes pops up. To use two programmes at the same time, users must drag an application from this list next to the one that’s already opened.

Other important functions are also hidden in the corners of the display for mouse users. If you move the pointer to the lower or upper right, the new Charm Bar opens. This allows users for example to look for files and share them with others on the internet. The Settings includes the control panel, which has the function to shut the computer down.

Microsoft has collected other tips in dealing with its new user interface and put them on its support website. Among the hints is how to close a programme — by clicking on it and dragging it from the top of the screen to the bottom.

But this step is not actually necessary according to the developers as the system does not slow down if many programmes are open. The usual classic programmes meanwhile run like normal on the desktop, complete with task bar and X button in the upper right corner to close it. You can reach the desktop by clicking on the corresponding tile or by using the key combination Windows and D.

Those who would like to get there directly when they start up must use some tricks, according to German computer magazine c’t. The free open source program Classic Shell can be used so that no tile pops up when the computer is started. It can also reconstruct the old start menu — or at least a copy that looks similar. And users can decide which programmes, folders and files are included in the menu.

Often your old computer is not that old to call it completely obsolete. Most of the parts like the hard drive, DVD-player, memory chips, sound and graphic cards could be still in very good shape, including the casing and the monitor. If there is a part that is faulty, it can be easily replaced without putting too much load on your wallet. If it was too slow, you might even consider upgrading the motherboard and the processor. This doesn’t cost a whole lot of money either.

Replacing just couple of parts may turn this old device of yours to almost new – performance wise. You can use it to store all your favorite music files or videos or use it as a gaming station for your children. It can also be used for other applications like a dedicated PC for your home surveillance system or automation system.

Luckily, cleaning your Registry is easy and there are plenty of free and paid programs available which will help you do it. A software program will not upgrade your memory but it will clean out all the junk files, detect Malware, delete unused registry keys, Automatic Driver updates, and more.  At the moment I am using PC Matic to maintain everything for me. 3—Safe Mode

Most people I’ve talked to about this subject seem to have no idea what safe mode is for. Do you? The answer is that it’s for fixing major problems with Windows by turning off some default actions. For example:

Safe mode will prevent most programs from starting up automatically, so if your problem is with one of those programs, you’ll discover it immediately.
Safe mode won’t load the drivers for most non-essential hardware, so if some of your hardware is malfunctioning, you’ll discover it immediately.
Safe mode can also help you discover damage from viruses, but I still think your anti-virus software is better equipped to deal with those problems
To access safe mode, press and hold the F8 key when your computer starts booting.

4—Blame Windows

Sometimes the problem with your computer is your operating system, Windows. That doesn’t necessarily mean Microsoft messed up—it could be that an old virus deleted an important file.

But diagnosing a problem with Windows from within Windows can be challenging. What you need is an outside authority—I suggest Linux.

You can download a “Live” Linux CD which won’t install anything on your computer but which will boot Linux for as long as the CD (or DVD) is in your disc drive. I suggest you use Ubuntu:

Go to the Ubuntu website using a working computer, download the current CD or DVD, whichever you prefer (DVDs have more stuff but take longer to download), burn the CD or DVD, and put it in your computer. Reboot your computer and see if it works.

If Linux can get your computer to work, then there’s nothing wrong with the hardware—there’s something wrong with Windows, which brings us to our next tip for how to repair your computer:

5—Reinstall Windows

In the Windows 95 and 98 days, we used to reinstall Windows about once a year just to keep things moving smoothly. That was the great thing about Windows XP—it was stable for much longer periods. But if you get a problem in Windows which you can’t fix any other way, reinstalling Windows is still your best option.

It’s important to backup all of your important files before you reinstall Windows. If your computer won’t boot Windows, either use the Linux method described above to access your files and copy them to DVDs or external hard drives, or take the hard drive out of your computer and use an external hard drive adapter to copy the files to another computer.

After backing up your files, reinstalling Windows should be easy. Most computers these days let you reinstall Windows from a special entry in your boot menu—if you can’t find that option, consult the manual which came with your computer or use a working computer to search for your model of computer on the Internet.

6—Blowing Your Problems Away

If the problem with your computer is hardware, not software, there may not be much you can do. Most modern electronics are not field serviceable—if they’re broke, they’re junk. However, there is one thing you can do to bring some electronics back to life: blow on them.

Specifically, blow the dust off of them. Dust is a powerful insulator—it’s technically almost exactly the same stuff (primarily cellulose) used in high-end home insulation to help keep heat inside your house during the winter and outside during the summer.

With the dust holding the heat inside your computer, parts begin to fail. Most modern electronics are only designed to work up until about 35 Celsius or 110 Fahrenheit before automatically shutting off to prevent severe damage or fire.

If you get rid of the dust, your parts won’t get as hot and they may begin to work again. But let me warn you: heat-damaged parts are more likely to fail than undamaged parts, so don’t expect miracles.

To clear the dust out of your powered-off computer, grab a handkerchief, cover your eyes, inhale through the handkerchief, and blow as hard as possible without spitting. Alternatively, you can work much faster (although not quite for free) by using a can of compressed air from your local supermarket or office supply store.

7—Your Last Resort

If none of the techniques described above helped you fix your computer, I suggest you call for help. Call the manufacturer—even if your computer is out of warranty. Most manufacturers have toll-free support numbers, so the call won’t cost you anything and the worst that can happen is that they’ll be unable to help you for free. On the other hand, they may know a free way to repair your computer.

Microsoft: Windows 8 response in India overwhelming

BANGALORE: Microsoft today said response in India to the recently-launched Windows 8 has been overwhelming, and 300 apps developed at the recent AppFest organised by the company here are in the process of getting into the Windows Store.

Within four days of the launch of Windows 8 last week, there have been four million downloads globally which is "clearly indicative of adoption rate", Microsoft India chairman Bhaskar Pramanik said.

"Response in India is equally overwhelming - not just in terms of downloads but in terms of foot-falls we have seen in all our stores, all across the country", he said, at the launch road-show here. "From India, we have built a huge number of applications".

He referred to last month's AppFest where developers built, designed and tested apps for the Windows platform. "They created nearly 700 apps, of which 300 are in the process of getting into the Windows Store as we talk. Some are already in the Store; some are getting in," Pramanik told reporters.

How Google is changing your daily life

Lisa Cericola, 31, a food editor and blogger, recently held a party at her home in Brooklyn, NY, with grilled steak and chimichurri on the table and the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the iPod.

Soon, a debate broke out. Was the singer saying, "With burned shed it's a lovely view?" Or "With blood I shed alone with you?"

Like most people these days, Cericola knew what to do. She grabbed her BlackBerry and Googled. (The answer, from the song "Scar Tissue": "With the birds I'll share this lonely view.")

"Looking up something really fast actually adds to the conversation," Cericola said.

But if Cericola was content with how quickly she ended the debate, Google and other technology companies are not. They know they are the uninvited guests at social gatherings everywhere, and they want to ingratiate themselves with the hosts by figuring out new, less intrusive ways to join the party - as varied as voice search, internet-connected glasses and other wearable computers, or dining room tables outfitted with screens.

Googling the answer to a question has become accepted social behavior, but "it's still somewhat awkward when you see that at a dinner party," said Amit Singhal, senior vice president in charge of search at the company. "The key to the future is how can you make such conversations socially even more normal."

Singhal is talking about what computer scientists call ubiquitous computing or intelligence augmentation - the idea that computers will no longer be devices we turn on, but so integrated into our everyday environment that we can ask them to do things without ever lifting a finger.

"It's not just a question of having screens everywhere or wearing a screen, but also this whole idea of phones and devices becoming more context-aware, so they can offer information that is highly relevant," said Pattie Maes, founder and director of the MIT Media Lab fluid interfaces group, which studies how to integrate digital information into daily life.

If people are discussing the migratory patterns of monarch butterflies over dinner, for instance, phones will be able to hear that and present a map, she said. Or when you meet someone, your glasses could show you the person's LinkedIn profile and your last email exchange.

"It's the integration of the digital and physical worlds so no longer are they two relatively separate spheres where you have to make the connection between them," Maes said.

Many tech companies are trying to integrate the two worlds. In Apple's new iPhone, Siri, the voice-activated assistant, can answer questions about current movies, sports and restaurants.

Microsoft is experimenting with computers that understand gestures and voice, like gloves with sensors, Bing voice search on the Xbox and gesture recognition on the Kinect. IBM is teaching machines to learn and interact with people, including in hospitals. But Google is at the forefront, with vast research about what kinds of questions people want answered - and when.

Google says its internal logs reveal that mobile searches spike during mealtimes, when people are away from their computers but still want information immediately. And people ask more questions about trivia - "How tall is the Statue of Liberty" (answer: 305 feet) and "How old is the earth" (4.54 billion years) - on mobile devices than on computers.

To make these searches easier, last month Google introduced mobile search apps for Android phones and iPhones that let people ask questions aloud and listen to Google answer in a vaguely robotic woman's voice. The idea is that people do not have to excuse themselves from conversation to type a query, and everyone can hear the answer, as if Google were another guest.

In May, Google introduced fact cards to answer trivia-type queries; these are answers on the search results page, so people do not have to click on a link, wait for a Web page to load and further delay the conversation. Say you urgently need to know Ryan Gosling's net worth. Search on your phone and above the links to search results, Google tells you. (It is $50 million.)

Google Glass, eyeglass frames that let people use the Web on a tiny screen near their temples, are not yet for sale but will let people find answers without reaching into their pockets. So will other wearable computers that Google plans to experiment with, like watches.

The company is also studying screens that could be built into kitchen walls or dining room tables, to make Google a constant companion that everyone in the room could talk to.

"If we take it to the next step, which we're excited about, Google and the information I need is right here in the room with me," said Scott Huffman, the engineering director in charge of mobile search at Google. "As we're talking, we just say, 'Hey, Google, blah blah blah,' and it comes up on a screen or tells you the answer."

That does not excite everyone.

"It sounds like a horrible dystopian nightmare," said Helena Echlin, who wrote the Table Manners etiquette column at Chow, the food site.

Still, Echlin says she may change her tune when everyone is wearing computers on their faces. Five years ago, after all, she wrote that no one should ever use a cellphone at mealtime. Now, she said, "you'd have to be a complete Luddite to ban a phone from the dinner table."

Phil Maslow, 27, who works for a pharmaceutical startup in New York, has no problem relying on Google at his fingertips, no matter the setting.

"It's a substitute for a good memory," he said. "I get to skip a lot of anguish."

More than once he has been talking to an acquaintance from college at a party, he said, and had no idea who the person was.

"While I was talking to them, I sneakily looked them up on Facebook and then used their name to get me out of a jam," he said.

One effect of all this Google searching at social events is the resurgence of a retro kind of party, trivia night. At a weekly trivia night run by David Smithyman, 27, in Brooklyn, using cellphones is cheating.

"There's a joy to being stumped by something with your friends for a little while," Smithyman said. "Then when you finally do read out the answer, there's this palpable reaction. It's a very cool moment that doesn't really happen in other places anymore."

For an eight character long password, after all the possible combinations, there are 6 quadrillion possibilities which is quite hard to guess.

*Make sure that your password does not contain your user name, real name or company name and also it is not a complete word. The other way is to reverse the order of the characters. For example, Hell0u2@ can also be written as @2u0lleH which is a strong password. Though it is not necessarily the best option, but still better than keeping words the way they are spelt.

*It is always advisable to keep changing your passwords regularly and also making sure that password recovery options are safe and up-to-date in case you forget (which will happen often!).

How to see if my password is strong or not
The password that you might have set meets all the criteria mentioned previously and still be a weak password.

For example, mouse2u@ meets all the criteria for a strong password listed above, but is still weak because it contains a complete word. M0u5E 2u @ is a stronger option because it replaces some of the letters in the complete word with numbers and also includes spaces.

This prevents hackers form stealing your password from a less secure website. *If you have saved you password on your PC, then choose a unique name for the file and keep it hidden.

What other precautions should I take to keep my accounts safe
