In the submit world’s poorest countries, inundated by rising seas and worsening disasters, made a last ditch plea for financial help early Saturday as negotiators at United Nations climate talks struggled to reach an ambitions deal to combat global warming.The two-week U.N. conference in the Qatar capital of Doha was never meant to yield a global climate pact to curb emissions of greenhouse gases — that has been put off until 2015. But many developing nations said they were increasingly frustrated with the lack of ambition from rich countries on everything from climate aid to the emissions cuts they will make until 2020.

Talks were set to end Friday but they continued into early Saturday with negotiators set to meet in several hours to assess progress. “The expectations we had for a great deal in Doha is no more. That is dust,” said Mohammed Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi who is a lead negotiator for a coalition of poor nations called the Least Developed Countries or LDC.

“We are facing day in and day out the adverse effects of climate change,” he said. “Nobody is nearby to rescue them. You see President Obama asking for huge funding for Hurricane Sandy ... But we won’t get that scale and magnitude of support.”

The biggest fight early Saturday swirled around what is called “loss and damage,” a relatively new concept which relates to damages from climate-related disasters. Island nations and LDC have been pushing for some mechanism to deal with this but the United States has pushed back over concerns they might be held liable for the cleanup bill since they are the world’s second biggest emitter behind China.

Many scientists say extreme weather events, such as Hurricane Sandy’s onslaught on the U.S. East Coast, will become more frequent as the Earth warms, although it is impossible to attribute any individual event to climate change.

“It’s becoming the last straw for the small island states, the least develop countries,” said Alden Meyer, of the U.S.-based Union of Concerned Scientists. “Seasoned negotiators are coming out of that room in tears, very emotional. They are starting to say what are we doing here? What is the point of these negotiations?”

And with the negotiations on the brink of failure, activists said they were giving up hope that any deal would include tough measures to protect the planet from the effects of global warming.

“The deal in Doha is a recipe for disaster. The deal in Doha is a coffin for the planet,” said Michael Dorsey, a professor at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, speaking outside the negotiations. “We will see the failure to have emission targets sufficiently high enough. We are going to see the failure to move critical resources to countries on the margin in the developing world who desperately need resources to get out ahead of the unfolding climate catastrophe that is playing out around the planet.”

Most of the key disputes revolved around money.

Poor countries, especially a coalition of island nations and African countries, came into the talks demanding a timetable on how rich countries will scale up climate change aid for them to $100 billion annually by 2020 — a general pledge that was made three years ago — and how they will raise the money.

HERBAL DRINK TO FIGHT DENGUE

Herbal drinks were given to fever patients in Srirangam Government Hospital on Wednesday, following the State government’s latest efforts to combat dengue by distributing Siddha preparations at all government hospitals in the State. Three herbal drinks, nila vembu kudineer, papaya leaf juice, and malai vembu juice, will be given to patients with fever and symptoms of dengue at all government hospitals and primary health care centres.

The health department has recommended a daily intake of 10 millimetre thrice a day. The herbal drinks not only help to keep fever under control but act as an immunity booster. While papaya leaf juice is said to increase platelet count, malai vembu boosts immunity.

According the T.Selvaraj, Joint Director, Department of Health Services, the treatment will only supplement and not replace allopathic treatment. As all medicines are derived from plants and herbs, the herbal drinks will not interfere with conventional treatment or produce any side effects, he added. Depending on availability, any of the three suggested herbal drinks will be given to patients.

Around 250 kilograms of nilavembu preparation have been sent out to hospitals in Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur and Tiruchi, according to T.Srinivasan, district Siddha medical officer. The powder can be mixed with drinking water. Welcoming the move, Dr. Kamaraj of the Siddha division at ESI Hospital said the hospital had been distributing the juice to all inpatients and outpatients since the onset of dengue and had reported less than five dengue positive cases. Collector Jayashree Muralidharan kicked off the initiative by handing out herbal drinks at Srirangam GH.

LOW VITAMIN D INDICATES LONG LIFE

A study involving middle-aged children of people in their 90s have found that familial longevity was associated with lower levels of vitamin D and a lower frequency of allelic variation in the CYP2R1 gene, which was associated with higher levels of vitamin D. Previous studies have shown that low levels of vitamin D are associated with increased rates of death, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, allergies, mental illness and other afflictions. However, it is not known whether low levels are the cause of these diseases or if they are a consequence.

                       
                                                        

To determine whether there was an association between vitamin D levels and longevity, Dr. Diana van Heemst, Department of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands, and her colleagues looked at data from 380 white families with at least 2 siblings over age 90 (89 years or older for men and 91 year or older for women) in the Leiden Longevity Study.

The study involved the siblings, their offspring and their offsprings' partners for a total of 1038 offspring and 461 controls. The children of the nonagenarians were included because it is difficult to include controls for the older age group. The partners were included because they were of a similar age and shared similar environmental factors that might influence vitamin D levels.

The Dutch researchers measured levels of 25(OH) vitamin D and categorized levels by month as they varied according to season. Tanning bed use, which can affect vitamin D levels, was categorized as never, 1 times per year and 6 times per year.

The researchers controlled for age, sex, BMI (body mass index), time of year, vitamin supplementation and kidney function, all factors that can influence vitamin D levels. They also looked at the influence of genetic variation in 3 genes associated with vitamin D levels.

"We found that the offspring of nonagenarians who had at least 1 nonagenarian sibling had lower levels of vitamin D than controls, independent of possible confounding factors and SNPs [single nucleotide polymorphisms] associated with vitamin D levels," said the researchers.

"We also found that the offspring had a lower frequency of common genetic variants in the CYP2R1 gene; a common genetic variant of this gene predisposes people to high vitamin D levels."

"These findings support an association between low vitamin D levels and familial longevity," they noted.

They postulate that offspring of nonagenarians might have more of a protein that is hypothesized to be an "aging suppressor" protein. More research is needed to understand the link between lower vitamin D levels, genetic variants and familial longevity.

Statins and drugs together pose health risk.Millions of people who take statins to ward off heart attacks and strokes, must cut their dose over fears that they are at risk of serious side-effects. Statins have been hailed as a wonder-drug  which can slash cholesterol and protect against a host of chronic illnesses.But the medicines regulator is concerned that some could suffer agonizing muscle problems, lung disorders and kidney damage, the Daily Express reported.It warned that those taking simvastatin in combination with drugs which slash high blood pressure are at risk of the side-effects.

Some people should take a lower dose or be moved on to another statins  the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said. Experts want those aged over 50 to be routinely prescribed with them to ward off a host of chronic and potentially fatal illnesses from heart problems to cancer and dementia, even if they are deemed at low risk.

They say giving an extra five million people statins would cut heart attacks and strokes by 10,000 a year and save at least 2,000 lives.
However, the side-effects are well known with some taking the drug suffering mild side-effects such as insomnia and stomach upsets to a rare but serious lung disorder.

Most experts still agree that the benefits of taking them far outweigh any risks.But now studies have shown that patients taking simvastatin, particularly at a 40mg dose which is the most commonly prescribed daily amount, suffered more problems if they were also taking the drugs amlodipine and diltiazem.

These are used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain associated with heart disease and they are often prescribed with simvastatin.The side-effects are those usually associated with statins, including muscle problems such as pain, tenderness, weakness and cramps and more rarely muscle breakdown leading to kidney damage.

These were found to occur more frequently when patients were on both drugs at the same time. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has produced a patient leaflet with the dose recommendation changes.But patients already taking the drug combination are being advised not to stop their medication but talk to their doctor instead.

The advice suggests that doctors can lower the simvastatin dose because the side-effects are less common on a 20mg dose, or switch them to another statin entirely."We have recently published information on dosing recommendations for simvastatin which were updated due to a small risk of an increase in side-effects when it is used at higher doses in conjunction with amlodipine or diltiazem," an MHRA spokesman said.

"We have advised that patients continue their treatment and discuss this with their doctor at their next routine appointment," he said.
